Penny Harvest winner!

Throughout the year, the student-led Penny Harvest team has been working with Humanities classes to raise money for the Penny Harvest competition through the organization Common Cents. After a month of campaigning, we raised over $1000!

Last week the team went to all four class meetings to give a presentation on different organizations that we could donate our $1000 to, either Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF, the Heifer Project or the Red Cross. After tallying all of the votes, we are happy to announce the winner was Doctors Without Borders!

Prom fundraising proposals:

-      Bake sale: will not be able to be on the balcony as noted on the sheet (4/14-4/15 at lunch), all items will be donated by students

-      Change war: profits go to the prom funds. Four jars at the desk, one for each class – penny is minus one point, silver is one positive point – from 4/14 to 5/18

o   Typically the profits are split between the winning class and the other benefactor (in this case prom), either a 25/75 split, or a 50/50 split           

-      Another opportunity to have a bake sale would be at the QSR night

-      Unanimous motion to approve the two junior/senior prom fundraisers

Penny Harvest winner:

-      There will need to be an announcement of the winners on morning announcements – Doctors Without Borders is the winner

Elections for next year

-      Having co-officers for next year is a great idea so that if one officer is unable to attend there is still representation

-      Keep thinking about whether or not you’d like to be on Senate next year

Ideas for next year

-      Having beginning art a requirement for freshman, there is no integration between the classes in the electives, unlike previous years. In occupation ed classes, there are generally only upperclassmen

-      Scheduling for next year: students/senate members need to be involved in scheduling for next year and have some representation – officers should get in contact with the PLT (Professional Leadership Team) in charge of scheduling – Spanish/Math teachers

-      Staff meeting next Wednesday that the senate officers should be involved in

-      If each student had a free period next year then they might be able to have on study hall-like class

-      If students are aware of the free and reduced lunch list, then our school receives more money per student for the school

-      When we have no food court options next year, classes might want to each assume one day per week when we can provide a lunch option for the students (for example, we could get in contact with some of the businesses in the surrounding blocks to see if they’d be willing to give us a reduced price – for example Pagliacci pizza one day a week)

Movie nights for the school on Friday nights

-      Ashley would be interested in hosting a school movie night for the Friday after break (or two weeks after break)

HSPE

-      The sophomores will be taking the HSPE Science test this coming Tuesday, April 12th

-      Ms. Libby would like a total of $116 out of the general ASB fund to approve 4 hrs of a TPS Theatre Space and 2 hrs of a Rehearsal Space

ASB Fundraising Application for the Senior Events Committee

-      Devon Hall would like to approve an Open Mic/Talent Show Fundraiser to reduce the ticket price for upcoming prom

-      This fundraiser will not require any ASB funding

-      Conference Room B, April 28^th, 2011 – 6-8pm

-      There will be a $5 ticket cost to attend the talent show

-      Motion approve to allow Devon and the senior class hold a fundraiser to benefit the prom cost defraying

-      Ideally, we would like a group of sophomores to attend each of the other classes class meetings to present the four organizations to the school to vote on at the class meeting. We would also need to have a brief summary of each of the organizations and why we would like to donate to them

School budgeting

-    We need to be more proactive about taking records of school spending, especially that of school condoned clubs. Each club is technically responsible for having an advisor present at every session, as well as submitting minutes from each meeting to senate. Additionally, we need to monitor TCS clubs spending more carefully.

o   Club minutes are to be submitted to the TCS Senate minutes binder after the general ASB minutes, in the club section

-    We need to be prepared for the event that our school is audited

Leia and Dana return to discuss their senior project on Students Inspiring Creative Activism

-    They read their mission statement and constitution

-    Workshops, two hours 3:15-5:15 on Fridays beginning next Friday if approved for three Fridays

-    Meetings are open to ANYONE in the school, not just seniors

-    Would like $20, if possible to provide snacks for the meetings

-    They are just in the planning of the campaign, but they are thinking of having some photos or PSAs sponsored by film/photography classes

-    Dae Jin. Matthew. Sam, Lacaia, Claire, Eva, Dana Cierra, Skye are interested in assisting with the campaign – meeting on Tuesday at lunch, we’ll debate the official meeting time then

-    The target is to reduce tobacco/drug usage in the school community

-    All ideas are welcome

MUN funding from New York/for Mr. Bell’s sub

-    Is there any money left in the general fund from MUN? As the minutes state, any leftover money is to go into the ASB general budget to help with the cost senate paid for Mr. Bell’s sub while MUN was in NYC

-    MUN is also required to submit minutes from each meeting – they should begin to do so ASAP

Sophomore bake sale 3/28

-    Sophomores would like to have a bake sale on 3/28 (the sophomore class bake sale was unable to happen on 3/17)

-    Bake sales from now on need to take place in the commons, not on the balcony

-    Next year the Center House will be under construction (not including TCS) so all of the food will be unavailable. We will likely have to eat in the classrooms, but the construction will not impact any learning as it will take place at night. It will take all year, and is estimated to be completed in May 2012 in honor of the 50^th anniversary of the Seattle World’s Fair

-    Note: There will still be a Starbucks cart on campus, no need to panic

-    Motion approved by senate, as well as permission to continue sales on Tuesday 3/29 in the event of spillover

Agenda:

-      Teacher Appreciation Day: Thursday, May 5^th

-      HSPE encouragement

-      St. Patrick’s day bake sale

HSPE testing, 3/15-17/11 for Sophomores

-      We’d like to offer snacks, based on parent donations, for the sophomores taking the test on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

-      Granola bars, fruit, etc.

-      Science test will be 4/12

-      Will anyone volunteer to make a sign today for the snack volunteers? Does someone have a free period to do this in?

-      You may bring for testing: a book/magazine, thesaurus and dictionary for testing, #2 pencil(s)

-      August 8^th and 9^th for makeup testing. Do not show up late or you are in jeopardy for needing to makeup your testing.

St. Patrick’s day bake sale:

-      Will take place March 17^th during lunch

-      A unanimous concensus to approve the bake sale based on the members present

-      Reminder, lunch takes place from 11:30 to 12 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week

-      If there are leftovers, senate has also approved to allow selling of the baked goods after school on Thursday

Treasurers meeting with Ms. Libby

-      Tuesdays after school was the time slot offered by Ms. Libby to have all the class treasurers meet with her to go over the finances

-      The treasurers will talk with Ms. Libby to arrange a meeting with her before next Friday, 3/25

Class meetings for elections of new senate officers

-      We should have a community/class meeting schedule so that we can talk with our classes about the new senate officers for class reps as well as any positions that are not currently being filled. (Either the 23^rd of 30^th.)

Alex’s fundraiser for Japan relief:

-      Alex would like to have a fundraiser for Japan earthquake relief. Ms. Wyn will check the rules and regulations for proper procedures when having a fundraiser for an outside organization.

-      We will proceed with paperwork and specifics during a small meeting during lunch today to figure out how to get approval.

-      (Update: we are unable to have a fundraiser for an outside organization, however, we could use our allotted $1000 from Penny Harvest towards a Japan relief organization.)

Teacher Appreciation Week

-      The first week of May is the teacher appreciation week. We will discuss the as the week approaches.

MUN to New York:

-       Many ASB members will be attending NHSMUN in New York next week, should we have a meeting even in though many will be in New York. A quorum is when at least 75 percent of the members are in attendance. There appear to still be enough members to have a legal meeting while many people will be gone in New York. Next week Sam Wolk will be “Faye” while she is in New York.

Senior Project presentation - Dana and Leiah S.I.C.A:

-       Dana and Leiah ould like to have workshops for their Senior Project, especially with underclassmen. Their project is about Students Inspiring and Creating Activism. They would like to have workshops for their project and/or a platform to be able to talk to students. They should talk to Britsova about having some time to do a workshop w/ freshman. Maybe during HSPE testing (freshman will have nothing to do – a 2 hr window).

Relay for Life Team:

-       Sierra knows people from various schools who have Relay for Life teams. RFL is where people walk for 24 hours and raise money. Proposition to start a committee to look into starting a Relay for Life team: passed unanimously.

PNB’s Pinnocchio:

-       Would a group of students like to go see Pinnocchio – 1 hour show? How can we create a group of people who would like to go? Likely a small cost to see the showing as it is for school groups, and we can get about 40-50 tickets. Elena can chair a committee to get

Billy Elliott:

-       Opportunity to see BE on 3/22 at the opening night performance for $28.

MUN Bakesale:

-       MUN had a bakesale last night at the open house. They are asking to sell their excess baked goods today at lunch. Motion approved by Wyn/Libby, senate.

Mr. Bell’s sub:

-       Senate has approved paying for Mr. Bell’s sub while he is in New York. The minimum cost is $845 for five days, yet we can ask to have MUN pay for a sub cost that exceeds $1000. Motion to propose we cap the sub fee ASB’s willing to give from the general fund  is $900. Motion approved. (Over the seven years of MUN, this is the first year Mr. Bell has not had an intern. In the past CSCA has approved to pay for the sub. Any excess money that MUN raises, they will give back to the general fund.)

10% tax:

-       Ms. Libby has not been taking a ten percent tax on any general fundraisers as she was not aware of the new tax (initiated in the fall). It is possible to go back and take a 10 percent tax off of those fundraisers, treasurers should meet with Libby to go over finances.

Treasury meetings with Ms. Libby:

-       Ms. Libby is offering to have a weekly meeting on perhaps Tuesdays after school for treasurers to meet with her and look at treasury/accounting on the computer with her. They will be able to make transfers if necessary.

2 weeks from now is the HSPE:

-       Sophomores will have the HSPE test. Juniors will have QSR presentations. Seniors will have book chats. Should we offer the sophomores some food when they arrive at the test? Either a pay-it-forward or pay-it-backward tradition so that each year the sophomores can have some snacks while they take the test.

Motion to move the Senate meeting for HSPE week to 3/14 at 8:45. Approved.

Agenda:

-       Money

Money:

-       Ms. Libby attended district meeting and is reporting that we have been conducting treasury business incorrectly.

-       Now each ASB sponsored purchase needs to be announced at senate meetings so that we can approve the spending

-       Matthew Wolf spent $16 at Goodwill to purchase baskets for each classroom to hold scrap paper. Motion passed to reimburse him.

Student tours:

-       Overall tours were pretty successful

-       Keep parents with the 8^th grade students on the tours so that parents can ask questions and be vocal, to supplement the shyness of 8^th grade students

-       Stay in each of the classrooms for only 2-3 minutes, not 10-15 – which is too long to be in one place for

-       Next year we should not have such a scheduled plan for who goes to each of the rooms at certain times, maybe instead just go and pop into each room for a few minutes

-       At the end of the tour we had a good Q&A with Sam Wolk’s mom.

-       Keep students on tours in a group with people that they know so that they are a little more vocal, however it’s rather difficult to insure that every student will know someone on the tour. Or at least group people together with others from their same schools.

-       Have every tour go to every classroom so that everything is represented. Find a way to stagger the groups so that each group goes to a classroom with every subject.

-       Another student tour will take place in March

-       We should have a meeting with Ms. Britsova to discuss the suggestions for improvements on student tours

Dance Club:

-       A club for all dancers at the school to have to club to join so they can have stuff of their transcripts

-       Eventually they’d like to start teaching ballet in the TPS rooms Tuesday mornings

-       Another club called TCS Shuffle, after school Wednesday/Friday’s, free, drop in class, attend any day you want. Learn a move that day and add it to your style of dance. (Ballet/Melbourne shuffle)

-       Overall objective is to bring the dancers at the school together: a dance club with two subsidiaries. Any TCS student can join if they’re interested in dancing.

-       Ballet may be requesting a donation for $8 an hour to rent the TPS rooms. They’d like an outside grant or to use their seed money to pay for the charge of the TPS rooms.

-       Two separate clubs at this point (they eventually want to merge). Only ballet club is asking for seed money. Motion passed to approve the Universal Dance Club (which is a name for both clubs).

-       Clubs need an advisor

Blog

-       Purpose is to keep students/staff/families aware of senate and school events 

-       Secretaries from each class have password to email/blog

-       Everyone has access to read the blog, we will create a link to it from the CSCA website

-       Student run blog for representation of the students/student senate

-       Integrate into RSS feed for easier access?

-       Update blog with minutes on Fridays after senate meeting

-       Master calender of school events

Motion to approve senate blog passed by majority

Yearbook:

-       Start laying out the book soon

-       Everyone gets 1-3 photos, in color, in the book

-       Almost everyone gets a book

-       Books are $30-40 dollars, unlike other schools that have much more expensive books

-       They will work over spring break, and some evenings/weekends to produce the book

-       About $3,000 dollars have been saved from profits of yearbooks

-       Ms. Wyn is proposing the idea to continue the yearbook and produce it for us – and have the staff members participating on the yearbook be paid. She is requesting around $2,000 dollars to compensate for her work.

-       Proposal is the take $2,000 dollars from the profits of the yearbook in the past to pay for Ms. Wyn’s time. This money is not coming from the ASB general fund, instead saved money from yearbook profits. She will submit a timesheet at the end of yearbook production to show her hours.  

Workshops:

-       Faye’s wondering if we should ask students to pay $5-10 dollars per session to support workshops (*in the event that we restart them)

-       If we choose to do this, it would be started next school year.

-       Money would pay for instructors, snacks, any surplus would go to ASB general fund
